Activities

This is a very sparsely populated area– the only industry is logging and mining.     It is pretty darn quiet here and heavily wooded.  Very little infrastructure (no restaurants) in the immediate area but the hardware store 10 minutes away has pretty much everything you need, including some grocery basics. You can find big  grocery stores in Iron Mountain and Ishpeming.

    • Lakes: Horseshoe lake is good size lake with great paddling, fishing and swimming. Hiking/swimming Map .  Neighboring Twin Lake has nesting loons.  We love paddling nearby Squaw lake because the water is super clear — and if you fish, it has trout.
    • We have 40 acres that border state of Michigan land to hike around. There is creek with a couple of beaver dams that make a nice destination.
    • Gravel roads that are sparsely populated make for good biking or hiking.
    • The Michigamme river nearby is good kayaking.
    • Van Riper State Park 30 minutes north – trails, swimming, fishing, boating
    • Iron Ore Heritage trail (republic MI) is new off road bike path.
    • The Republic/Champion grade bike trail just north of Republic.  It is wild, scenic and moose country.   You can park on 95 where the trail crosses and ride west toward Champion.
    • The city of Marquette 45 minutes to the north on Lake Superior is a worthwhile destination.  They have a natural foods coop.
    • A great waterfall hike:  Dead River Falls near Marquette.  End your day at Presque Isle Park.
    • Another falls hike is at Canyon waterfall park near L’Anse. Hike all the way to the end of the canyon.
    • Ishpeming and Negaunne  have beautiful old downtowns with great antique shops.  And Ishpeming has a wonderful brew pub.
    • Crystall Falls 40 minutes west is a pretty old town and worth a visit.
    • Munising and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is 1 hour 45 minutes.
    • The UP does have some nice waterfalls: http://www.uptravel.com/waterfalls-of-the-u.p.-59/
